Ebru / Marbling

A Short Introduction to Ebru/Marbling

Marbling is an art born from the dance of colors on the surface of water, a practice where each work is unique and unrepeatable. For centuries, it has flourished in these lands , sometimes as delicate decorations on manuscripts, sometimes as a meditative practice in dervish lodges, and sometimes as a striking feature of art exhibitions.

For me, marbling is not only a technique inherited from tradition. It is also a metaphor for the delicate balance between human patience and the fluidity of water. Each drop of paint finds its own path, sometimes exactly as I intend, sometimes in ways I could never predict. That’s why marbling feels like a journey that teaches me both how to take control and how to let go.

My Marbling Story

My own path began not with water, but with stone, earth, and history. As a chemical engineer working in restoration and conservation, I spent years studying materials of historic buildings. In the lab, I discovered that even stones carry thousands of years of memory. That perspective brought me closer to colors, textures, and eventually, to marbling.

When I first encountered marbling, what I saw was tradition: the patience of masters, the simplicity of the patterns, and the quiet calm of water. But over time, I realized this art doesn’t belong only to the past, it speaks to the present and the future as well. That’s when I began to find my own voice.

In my marbling journey, classical tulip motifs coexist with modern graphics, pop-art posters, digital experiments, and even street exhibitions. Because for me, marbling is not just “sprinkling paint on water”,  it is the meeting point of science and art, of tradition and modernity, of the personal and the universal.

With every new piece, I leave behind a part of myself, while also creating space for viewers to find their own stories.

My Work

Throughout my marbling journey, I have created works in different directions and series. Each reflects both my personal expression and the many faces of this art:

  • Traditional Touches: Tulips, roses, violets, and classical motifs , honoring tradition.

  • Modern & Experimental: Pop-art inspired posters, retro concert series, digital works, and illustrative marbling experiments.

  • In the Streets & in Life: “Free Art” street projects, bodymarbling experiences, international exhibitions, and festivals.

In all my works, I try to highlight the fluidity, unpredictability, and surprises that are inherent to marbling. For me, marbling is just like life: we can control part of it, but the rest must be left to the flow.
